"I love you." He said it with such conviction, closing his eyes as if trying to memorize how the words felt on his tongue. I know those words, they are my comfort.

"I love you so much," he said, again.

This time felt different. I felt a spike in my heart rate, something like panic rising in my throat. He kept his eyes closed. I pulled the blanket closer to my body. Protection.

At first he didn't continue. I relaxed. He loves me. He opened his eyes.

"But I think we should break up."

That is the sound of my heart stopping.
